About Houry Schmeizl
Ms. Houry Schmeizl received her Master of Music in Pedagogy and Piano Performance and her Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance from the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT. At Hartt she studied under the tutelage of Peter Pertis, Dr. Watson Morrison, and Luis deMoura Castro. As a lifelong student of the arts, she is devoted to the pursuit of excellence in teaching. She was the founding director of the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts Music School in Torrington, CT, and has served as professor of music at The University of Connecticut and Briarwood College.
Ms. Schmeizl has been a professional ballet accompanist for several prestigious ballet companies including the American Repertory Ballet in New Brunswick, NJ, and the Hartford Ballet in Hartford, CT. Her performance highlights include the 2014 Faculty benefit concert for the New England Piano Teachers' Association, numerous solo and duo faculty concert performances at the Parish Center for the Arts, the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts, the Revival Gospel Choir in Hartford, the Hartford Children’s Theater, and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with Ronnie Spector. Ms. Schmeizl is also a trained Suzuki Accompanist, and vocal accompanist.
Houry
has dedicated over 20
years to
developing the artistic abilities of her students. Under her
guidance, Ms. Schmeizl’s students have received many awards and
honors including five first place trophies and cash prizes at the
2014 Crescendo International Competition (concerts held in Carnegie
Hall, NYC), numerous top level trophies and awards at the Bay State
Piano Competition (MA), the American Fine Arts Festival (NY), Steinway
Piano Competition (MA), Audrey Thayer Piano Competition
(Hartford, CT), Select Student Auditions and Performances
(CT), MMTA Judged Piano festival, and top tier scores in
the Piano Guild auditions for seven consecutive years. In addition,
Ms.
Schmeizl’s guidance has lead to admission to the Julliard
School - Preparatory Division.
A member of the Connecticut Music Teachers Association and chair of Youth recitals, Ms. Schmeizl has served on the executive board of the New England Piano Teachers' Association, and is a member of the Steinway Society. She is the author of the Armenian Songbook, My Childhood Reflections, Mangootyan Hoosherus.
Houry owns and operates Piano Academy in New Marlborough, MA, a private studio for advanced piano instruction, for families and children beginning at age 4.5.
